LAGRANGE — James Melvin Garris, 89, of LaGrange, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, surrounded by his family and dear friend, Emma Potter.

Melvin was born Sept. 27, 1924, in Wayne County to the late Charlie Ransom Garris and Nannie Bruce Sutton Garris.

Melvin’s beloved wife of 62 years, Gladys Tyndall Garris, preceded him in death exactly seven years ago on Oct. 4, 2006.

Melvin worked in construction for many years and was a member of Brogden Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening and most of all cherished time spent with his family.

A service of remembrance will be held Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at 7 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Davidson and the Rev. Tom Dorman officiating. Interment will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery.

Melvin is survived by three children, James Melvin Garris Jr. and wife, Sandra, Gerald Edward Garris and Dianne Garris Cianfarra; five grandchildren, Bryan, Nick and wife, Angie, Don and wife, Michelle, Denise and fiancé, Randy, Kevin and wife, Cindy; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday following the service of remembrance and at other times they will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Garris, 101 North Court, LaGrange.
