SAULSTON -- Thomas Manley Gurley, 85, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Thomas was born in Wayne County Jan. 8, 1928, to the late John Henry Gurley and Margaret Smith Gurley. He was married for 53 years to the late Louise Herring Gurley.

Thomas was a retired farmer in the Saulston community. He was one of the chosen people of God, because those who labor in the earth will be forevermore honored in their calling.

Thomas was a member of Saulston United Methodist Church, and was a former member of Saulston Volunteer Fire Department.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Wayne Memorial Park, with pastor Carolyn Sims officiating.

Thomas is survived by his daughter, Kathy Pope and husband, Ray, of Snow Hill; granddaughter, Missey Runyon and husband, Leo, of Saulston; and great-grandchildren, Jonathan Runyon and fiancée, Allyson Flowers, Logan Runyon and Hannah Runyon.

He is also survived by his brothers, John William Gurley and wife, Peggy, of Saulston, Horace Gurley of Goldsboro and Jesse Ray Gurley and wife, Ann, of Saulston; and sister, Burnice Gurley Hinnant of Saulston.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Allen Kellam, and brother-in-law, the Rev. Carlie Hinnant.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534, or Cures for the Colors, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 28, 2013, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Missey and Leo Runyon, 203 Walnut Ridge Drive, Goldsboro.
