LAGRANGE -- The Rev. John Lewis Baker, 83, died Wednesday at his home in LaGrange.

The funeral service, conducted by his nephew, the Rev. Mitchell Gregory, will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Casey Funeral Home chapel. A committal service, conducted by the Rev. Kelly Buffaloe, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Progressive Presbyterian Church cemetery, 3790 Progressive Church Road in Princeton.

Rev. Baker was born in Rutherford County to the late Rev. R.T. Baker and Martha Hickman Baker.

He was a graduate of New Bern High School, Davidson College and Columbia Theological Seminary.

A Presbyterian minister for 42 years, he served pastorates in Alabama and North Carolina. Locally, he was pastor at the former George Kirby Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro, Progressive Presbyterian Church in Princeton and for 35 years, he was pastor of Antioch Presbyterian Church in Rosewood. Although retired, he continued to preach and minister on a regular basis.

He lived a life dedicated to Christian service and marked by humility and compassion. He was a beloved pastor, teacher and friend.

Rev. Baker was preceded in death by his parents and by his dearly loved wife of 54 years, DeLena Hughes Baker.

He is survived by his son, David Lewis Baker of Durham, and his sister, Dorothy Moss of Abbeville, S.C.

The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Casey Funeral Home in Princeton.

DUDLEY -- Olene Sutton, 80, 105 Colby Drive, Dudley, departed this life Sunday at Willow Creek Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 22, 1932, to Henry and Beatrice Wooten Whitfield in Wayne County, N.C.

Mrs. Sutton will be funeralized Saturday at 2 p.m. at Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church in Seven Springs. Burial will follow in St. Matthew Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in LaGrange, N.C.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Leatrice Whitfield, Lyndon Sutton of the home, Gabriel (Cynthia) Whitfield of Dudley, Jerry Whitfield of Charlotte and Orlando (Diane) Sutton of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; a special godson and nephew, Alden Whitfield of Jamaica, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Brenda Williamson of Raleigh, N.C.; siblings, Lanie Pearl Whitfield and John Whitfield of Jamaica, N.Y.; and sister-in-law Alma Whitfield of Goldsboro,

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 7 p.m., with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m., at Haskins Funeral Home of Goldsboro.

The family will receive friends at other times at the residence, where it will assemble in preparation for the funeral cortege.
