CLAIRE REID KALMAR

Oct. 31, 1931-April 16, 2013

HAMPSTEAD -- Claire Reid Kalmar, Hampstead, N.C., formerly of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., died April 16, 2013, at her home.

She was born Oct. 31, 1931, in Dallas, Texas, to the late Walter Reid and Ruth Turk Reid.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Nicholas Kalmar; her brother, Walter Deatherage Reid; and her sister, Ruth Caroline Reid.

She is survived by her daughters, Laura Elizabeth Kalmar of Hampstead and Ruth Kalmar Lewis and her husband, Richard Alan Lewis, of Charlotte; her son, Walter Reid Kalmar of Hampstead; and her grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Lewis and Sara Reid Lewis both of Charlotte.

Mrs. Kalmar attended Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and attended graduate school at Clemson University.

After moving from the family farm in Faison, N.C., to Wrightsville Beach in the mid-1960s, Mrs. Kalmar and her husband, Nick, enjoyed raising their family on the beach and entertaining friends.

There is no shortage of stories from the many exploits of interesting friends during that time frame.

Widowed in 1982, Mrs. Kalmar turned her attention to managing the family farm and real estate. Every business decision she made was underpinned by her love for her children.

She also cared deeply for her two grandchildren, and enjoyed sitting on her porch watching them play in her beautiful yard on the intracoastal waterway.

The family would like to thank her devoted caregiver, Pam Shepard, who gave her years of friendship, love and compassion, as well as Tamika Bethel, Paula Davenport, Kelly Rowan, Georgia Blanton and Dr. Linda Calhoun for their committed love and care.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, at Lebanon Chapel in Airlie Gardens.

Visitation will follow the service from noon to 2 p.m. at the home of Claire Efird, 5426 Efird Road, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the American Heart Association or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.andrewsmortuary.com.
