MOUNT OLIVE -- James Robert Baker, 85, Dale Road, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 23, 2013, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Mr. Baker, retired from the United States Navy, was also a retired employee of the town of Mount Olive, where he was known for operating the "street sweeper" while most of the town was asleep.

He, too, was a member of Calypso Baptist Church.

Funeral services with military honors will be held Wednesday, March 27, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Tyndall Funeral Home, with Dr. Greg Day and the Rev. Paul Rose officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, March 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and at other times at 648 Massey Road, Dudley, the home of Patricia Jenkins.

Mr. Baker is survived by six children and their spouses, Kathy B. and Jim Suits of San Ignacio, Belize, Mary B. and Carroll Grady of Mount Olive, Steve and Betty Baker of Raleigh, Susan B. Goodman and Bill Turner of Wilmington, Patricia B. Jenkins of Dudley and Tommy and Perry Baker of Goldsboro; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Martha Qualls Baker; his parents, Homer F. and Rosa Mathis Baker; a brother, Homer F. Baker Jr.; and five sisters, Dora B. Miller, Shirley B. Hill, Louise B. Newell, Cora B. Hinson and Dorothy B. Fowler.
