HELENE "ANDY" JOHNSON
Jan. 20, 1922-March 6, 2013
Helene "Andy" Johnson, 91, of Goldsboro passed away Wednesday morning at New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington. She was born in Indianola, Pa., to the late John and Anna Anderson.
After graduating from high school, Andy joined the United States Marine Corps and served in San Francisco during World War II. During this time, she met her husband, Ray Ingwald Johnson, and they married on Aug. 26, 1944. They moved back to Goldsboro where Andy worked in Quality Control at General Electric and Ray worked for CP&L, where they retired. They were married for 56 years prior to his passing away in 2000.
She was a very outgoing person who never met a stranger and would always help those in need. A member of St. Mary Catholic Church, she served on various Church Guilds. She prayed for healing and hope for many friends and families by adding their names to her prayer log. This special log has grown very thick throughout the years.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with Father Pat Keane presiding. The family will be receiving friends Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Pamela Peoples, who is the widow of Lewis Jackson Peoples Jr. (Bill Starr) of Wilmington; a sister, Ann (Richard) Wiwel of Cheswick, Pa.; two grandchildren, Heather Wrey of Asheville and Hilary Leigh (Michael Nalua'I) of Wilmington and niece, Carmen Merritt and nephew, Iasial Grady of Mount Olive; and many beloved nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home of Goldsboro is serving the family and online condolences may be sent through www.shumate-faulk.com.
