SHIRLEY A. MARTIN

Evangelist and friend to many, Shirley A. Martin, departed this life Monday at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.
She was born April 23, 1944, in Duplin County, and was the daughter of the late Burnice L. and Willie R. Moore Bass, and the wife of the late Walter E. Martin.
She was a 1961 Carver High School graduate, and received her Associate Degree from Wayne Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree from Barton's College and a master's degree from East Carolina University in nursing. She was a graduate of Kenneth Hagan Bible College, and was currently enrolled at United Christian College.
She served as acting director and assistant director at Cherry Hospital, and retired with 30 years of service.
After being called into the ministry, she served in the nursing home ministry, Sunday school teacher, missionary and prayer mission, choir member and youth choir director, devotional leader and evangelist.
Homegoing service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Bear Creek Association Headquarters, with Dr. Larry A. Honeyblue presiding and pastor Catherine McKinnon as eulogist. Entombment will follow, where she will be laid to rest with her husband at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley.
She leaves to carry on her legacy her children, Aubrey Martin (Laide) of Garner, Chanelle (LaFaith) Artis of Goldsboro and Derrick Martin (Rachel) of Pikeville; her grandchildren, Latrish Martin, Shamika Artis, Ambreia Artis Jalen Martin and Briana Martin; great-grandchildren, Zyelle Mayze and Aiden Artis; a brother, Richard Earl Bass (Dean) of Durham; a sister, Edna Pigford of Mount Olive; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Garris Funeral Home Chapel.
