PITTSBORO -- Mr. William Robert "Bill" Taylor Jr., 81, 310 Fearrington Post, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at the University of North Carolina Healthcare in Chapel Hill.
Bill was born in Wayne County Feb. 25, 1931, to the late William Robert Taylor Sr. and Mary McLean Taylor.
He was a member of Duke Chapel in Durham.
Bill was a lifetime member the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 139, and served on the board of directors of First Citizens Bank and Southern National Bank.
He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Later in his life, he was an assistant scoutmaster for Scout Troop No. 3.
Bill was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. While at the University of North Carolina, he was a member of Kappa Sigma, president of the Veterans Affairs Club for two years, member of the Yackety Yack staff for one year and member of the Shieks. Bill was a member of the University of North Carolina Rams Club from the time of his graduation until his death, and was an ardent supporter of the University of North Carolina football, basketball and baseball.
He served in the United States Coast Guard for three years during the Korean War aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Ingham.
Bill loved all forms of boating, and had a 33-foot Cape Dory sailboat, and later owned a 42-foot Grand Banks trawler. He spent 21 happy years boating in North Carolina, Florida and the Bahamas.
Bill worked for several years for Procter and Gamble, and later owned and operated Taylor Beverage Co. in Goldsboro for 31 years.
He enjoyed volunteering for the Meals on Wheels Program in Goldsboro and later in Pittsboro and Chapel Hill after moving to Fearrington Village.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro.
The family will receive friends immediately after the service.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Hawkinson Taylor; his son, William R. Taylor III and wife, Marsha, of Hampstead; his daughter, Kate Rucker Penn Taylor of Raleigh; and a stepdaughter, Martha Peacock Ferguson and husband, Mark, of Gastonia.
