Herbert Edward Williams Sr. was born Dec. 15, 1938, to the late Bertha Neal and Herbert A. Williams. On Oct. 28, 2012, he died at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mary Cleve Woodard Williams, and her parents, David and Virginia Woodard, all of the Rosewood community. He is survived by his sons, Herbert E. Williams Jr. and Dana S. Williams, of the home. Also left to mourn his loss are Linda L. Woodard of Chapel Hill, David and Carolyn Kincaid Woodard of Granite Falls, Justin Woodard and Christy Avery of Carrboro, and Jordan and Anton Rivera of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mr. Williams was a life-long resident of Wayne County, living much of that time in family homes on Ebenezer Church Road in Rosewood. He graduated from Rosewood High School in 1959, where he was a star basketball player. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving four years in Shreveport, La. He was employed for more than 35 years at Hevi-Duty Electric, and retired from the Oakland Fire Department with 24 years of service. He was a longtime member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church and a faithful member of the choir there.
Graveside services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Flowers are acceptable, or in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Pine Forest United Methodist Choir Fund, 867 Highway 581 South, Goldsboro, N.C. 27530.
