MILDRED DENNING HOWELL

Oct. 6, 1927-Oct. 27, 2012

Mildred Denning Howell, 85, passed away peacefully Saturday morning at her home in Grantham. She was born in Wayne County on Oct. 6, 1927, to the late Leon and Mackie Westbrook Denning.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Skinner and Rev. Richard Parson officiating. Burial will follow in the Howell Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

She retired from Sampson Sewing Center in 1989. Mildred, known as "Granny" to everyone she met, was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Westbrook Grove PFWB Church.

Mildred loved spending time with her family and her home was always full of love and laughter. She was a very humble lady that loved the Lord. She could stitch up a pair of pants, nurse a skinned knee and cook a full meal all in a day's work. She took great pride in providing for her family and friends. She enjoyed going to the mountains and watching the leaves change colors in the fall.

Mildred is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Howard B. Howell; a son, Buddy Howell; three daughters, Ann H. Denning, Janice H. Edwards and husband, Doodle, and Vickey H. Sanderson and husband, Kenneth; two brothers, Dewey W. Denning and Uriah Gene Denning; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a very special pet, her dog Lassie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Donald Denning and a great-grandson, William Landon Vann.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058.

Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the Howell family and online condolences may be directed to www.shumate-faulk.com.
