MOUNT AIRY -- Doris "Grandma" Nixon McLeroy Brown, 86, formerly of Goldsboro, passed away Monday evening at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy.

Born in Birmingham, Ala., Doris was the daughter of the late Hobert and Estelle Dendy Nixon, and wife of the late Bernard McLeroy.

She was also preceded in death by her son, James Bernard "J.B." McLeroy; a granddaughter, Eugenia "Genie" Raye McLeroy; her daughter-in-law, Sandra "Bugs" Kay McLeroy; and her son-in-law, Dale Glover.

She retired from Ponderosa Nursery in Grantham.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her children, Sandra McLeroy of Mount Airy, Phyllis McLeroy Glover of Camden, Tenn., Ronnie McLeroy of Newport News, Va., and Geary McLeroy and wife, Kay, of St. Louis, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

The family members would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Central Continuing Care of Mount Airy for its wonderful support and great care of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Known to many as Grandma, she touched the hearts and swatted the behinds of many. She was a strong believer in "it takes a village;" she had contributed to the upbringing and guiding of many generations.

"We just thought we would say, We love you and good-bye, We will miss you dearly, We promise not to cry.

"We know you'll always be with us, Wherever we go, No one needs to show us, We will always know.

"We don't want to say good-bye, But we'll meet again someday, We'll pick up where we left off, Before you went away."

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 3, between 1 and 6 p.m. at the home of Sandra McLeroy, 4508 N.C. 268, Ararat, N.C., 27007.

Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family, and online condolences may be directed to www.shumate-faulk.com.
