SHELTON OWENS

FREMONT -- Shelton Owens, 80, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8, 2012, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. Interment with military honors will follow at West Cemetery in Fremont.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 10 until 10:45 a.m.
Mr. Owens was born in Wayne County Feb. 18, 1932, to the late Edgar and Elizabeth Weaver Owens.
He was a fireman with the city of Goldsboro for 25 years, and a member of Wayne County Firemen's Association and the Benevolent Brotherhood.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Owens; a son, Shelton Owens Jr. of Eureka; his stepfather, Billy Ray Grimes of Fremont; a stepson, Jason Call and wife, Margie, of Pikeville; a stepdaughter, Melissa Melvin and husband, Eddie, of Goldsboro; five grandchildren, Kayla Melvin, Jordan Yawn, Hannah Call, Niklaus Call and Hailey Melvin; and his K-9 companion, Sparky.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Tapp.
Although flowers are welcome, memorial contributions may be directed to the Wayne County Animal Adoption and Education Center.
