ROLAND W. HARLOW

Aug. 9, 1953-June 1, 2012

Roland Warren Harlow, 58, died Friday, June 1, 2012 at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.

He was born in Baltimore, Md., to the late Les and Vivian Harlow.

Roland, a retired veteran of the United States Air Force, leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, and will be sorely missed by the long list of people who loved and respected him.

A memorial service in his honor is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Country Inn and Suites of Goldsboro.

Among those who will miss him most are Bee, his wife of 30 years; his daughters, Julie, 36, Samantha, 26, and Melanie, 25; his grandchildren, Zachary, 16, Emma, 15, and Delaney, 11; his older brother, Charles; and many nieces, nephews and countless people, who counted him as an honorary member of their own families.

Roland had been loved by many for his soft heart, his sharp wit and his seemingly endless knowledge about a world of topics (except for high school calculus homework).

His imposing stature belied his gentle temperament -- though his voice was naturally gruff, there are few who can recall ever having heard it raised in anger, though many may have received the arched eyebrow of disapproval. He was a patient and supportive source of advice, guidance, wisdom and humor, though each was typically served with a good-natured joke at the recipient's expense.

Roland was a wonderful husband, daddy, grandpa and friend, and he will be missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to the University of North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, c/o Medical Foundation of North Carolina Inc., 880 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill, N.C., 27514.

Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and Crematory of Goldsboro is serving the family, and online condolences may be sent through www.shumate-faulk.com.
