Gerald Clarence Herron, 78, died Thursday evening at his residence.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Joseph Elmer Herron and Ethel O'Connell Herron.

A well-thought-of preacher, he was a veteran of the United States Navy, and a member of American Legion Post 530 and New Apostolic Church.

A service to celebrate the life of Gerald will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home chapel, with apostle Reinhard Hecht officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Family and friends will gather at New Apostolic Church after the service for a time of fellowship.

A visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, and at other times will be at the home.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Herron; his children, Gerald H. Herron, Michael Henry Herron, Wendy Herron, Colleen Leftdwrige and husband, Charles, and Susan Britt and husband, Glenn, all of Goldsboro, and daughter, Charlene Schleif and husband, Mark, of Parma, Ohio; a brother, Joseph Herron; a sister, Priscilla Smoody; three half-sisters, Joanne McKeever, Mable Nelson and Janet Roth; nine grandchildren; and a special friend, Marcellus Leach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Community Soup Kitchen, 112 W. Oak Street, Goldsboro, N.C., 27533.
