FREMONT -- James "Eddie" Edward Norton Jr., 66, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family.

James was born in Johnston County Sept. 12, 1945, to the late James Edward Norton Sr. and Evelyn Pilkington Norton Kilpatrick.

He was well known throughout the farming community as an expert on tobacco, and worked the tobacco market for more than 44 years. James was working with United Tobacco Co. in Wilson as its leaf manager.

He was a member of Home Masonic Lodge No. 613 A.F. & A.M. in Fremont and the National Rifle Association.

James will be remembered for his devotion and love for his family and the excellent cook that he was. He also had a great love for fishing.

The family will gather for a time of remembrance and visitation Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

James is survived by his wife, Joan Dubberly Norton of Fremont; his sons, James "Jay" E. Norton III of Four Oaks and Christian Marler Norton of Smithfield; his stepfather, Frank Keith Kilpatrick and wife, Geraldine, of New Bern; his sister, Debbie Norton and husband, Dennis Gipprich, of Greenville; his grandson, Christian Chance Norton; his stepson, Gregory David "Dave" Abernathy IV; and his stepgrandson, Ethan Blake Abernathy.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Masonic Home for Children at 600 College St., Oxford, N.C., 27565.

With loving gratitude, the family would like to express a special thanks to the doctors and caregivers who showed him love during his sickness, especially Dr. Jason Boyd and his staff at Southeastern Oncology, as well as the nurses with Home Health and Hospice. You made his days at home very meaningful.
