QUEEN ESTHER SIMMONS

Sept. 6, 1931-Sept. 13, 2011

Queen Esther Simmons was born Sept. 6, 1931, to John Artis and Flossie Sauls, and raised by her caring parents, the Rev. W.H. Yelverton and Ethel Yelverton from nine years old and up until she joined into holy matrimony with Thessalonia Simmons Jan. 17, 1951.

To this union were born nine children. They were married for 43 years.

Queen attended, and completed her studies at, Eureka Elementary school, and attended Pikeville Training School until 10th grade.

She worked on the farm, and also received a diploma from Universal Schools obtaining studies in professional survey interviewing, and received another certificate in general clerk.

Queen Simmons worked at Americal Corp. for 10 years, and also worked part-time at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Queen was preceded in death by her husband, Thessalonia Simmons; a brother, Douglas Melvin Sauls; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Lewis and Minnie Bryant.

She leaves to cherish her memory nine children, Fess (Brenda) Simmons, Carolyn (Douglas) Simmons Core, Bessie (Anthony) Simmons Holmes, David (Christine) Simmons, Herman (Vicki) Simmons, Nathan Simmons, Pamela (Darryl) Simmons Braswell, Gerald Simmons and Corey (Kenesha) Simmons; a sister Mary Francis Peacock; four brothers, Curtis, Willie Frank, Ronnie and Jimmy Artis; two brothers-in-law, Raymond and Cleveland Simmons; 11 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at St. James Disciples of Christ Church, 514 Memorial Church Road, Fremont, N.C., from noon to 1 p.m.

Memorial service will be Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at St. James Disciples of Christ Church, 514 Memorial Church Road, Fremont, N.C., at 1 p.m.

The family will be receiving friends immediately following the services for a repast at St. James Disciples of Christ, 514 Memorial Church Road, Fremont, N.C.

Interment will follow the repast at Augusta Chapel Cemetery, 599 Durham Lake Road, Dudley, N.C.

The Simmons and connected family are receiving prestigious services from E.M. Matthews Funeral Home.
