VIRGINIA K. ABERNETHY

MOUNT OLIVE -- Virginia Kornegay Abernethy, 84, 1556 White Flash Road, Mount Olive, passed away quietly at home Tuesday morning, Sept. 13, 2011.
She graduated from B.F. Grady High School, attended Meredith College and graduated from Wake Forest College and then from Columbia University in New York, receiving a master's degree in mathematics.
Most of her teaching career was at Charlotte Country Day School, where she taught mathematics.
Being reared on her father's farm in the Pleasant Grove community near Mount Olive, it was after spending many years living in Charlotte that she and her husband retired and returned to live at her homeplace.
She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Robert and Yvonne Abernethy of Aiken, S.C., and Richard and Cherie Abernethy of Greenville, S.C.; four grandchildren, Garrett, Erin, Scott and Jeff Abernethy; two sisters, Ila Marie K. Harper and husband, Larry, of Mount Olive and Denise Ann K. Ward and husband, Tom, of Apex; and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband, George R. Abernethy; parents, Herbert T. and Ethel Moore Kornegay; and a sister, Ethel Belle K. Trotter; all preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. at Alum Springs Baptist Church, the church in which she was raised and of which she had been a longtime member. The Rev. Geoffrey Carter and the Rev. Elwood Oliver will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Memorial Park at Pink Hill.
The family will receive friends at Alum Springs Church Thursday, Sept. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m., and at other times at her home.

The Abernethy family wishes to acknowledge and offer special thanks to Renee Pope and Minnie Pearl Wilkins, and also Lorraine Overman, Cindy Heath, Linda Bennett and Crystal Bennett, for the love, care and faithfulness in supporting Mrs. Abernethy during her extended period of declining health.
