PEARLIE BELL NEWMAN
May 5, 1927-July 15, 2011
Pearlie Bell Newman, 412 Hinson St., affectionately known as "Nanny" and "Granrammy," was born May 5, 1927, in Orangeburg, S.C., to the late Luther and Emma Julia Murphy.
She lived in Orangeburg, S.C., until she graduated high school.
She then relocated to New Jersey, then on to Chicago, where she met and married Charlie Newman. To this union were born three children.
Pearlie then moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., with her daughters, where she became an Eastern Star, and was elevated to "worthy matron."
She was a member, and served on the usher board, of Brownsville Community Baptist Church.
Pearlie later relocated to Goldsboro, N.C., in 2004, where she became a member of Little Rock Baptist Church.
Pearlie worked and volunteered, faithfully and tirelessly for three years at O'Berry Hospital, where she fed, served as a companion and read books to many of the patients in the rehab unit.
Pearlie was a strong resilient, no nonsense woman of "faith!" Her faith, belief and trust in God was the key component of her being a cancer survivor. No matter how much pain she was in, whenever anyone asked her how she was doing, her response was always an upbeat "I'm hanging in there!"
Though Pearlie was a determined, strong woman of faith, she fought a good long fight until the father called her home July 15, 2011.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory three daughters, Emma Driskell, Rosa Lee (Charlene) Towner and Barbara Jean Greene; 18 grandchildren, Cynthia Driskell, Carl Driskell, Albert Driskell, Iesha Driskell, Michael Towner, James Towner, Larry Towner, Patricia (Daren) Campbell, James Jackson, Edward Jackson, Chester (Crystal) Jackson, Andrew (Dedra) Jackson, Tereena Jackson, Richard (Deborah) Greene, Bobby Greene, James B. Jackson, Eugene M. Jackson and Keisha Greene; 55 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; and special family friends, Sharon Dixon, Lawrence Greene, Phil and Tanger Newman, Carnell Mickens and Rodney Core.
A service of remembrance will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Little Rock Church of Christ, with a viewing taking place one hour prior to the service.
Following the services in the sanctuary, Ms. Newman's delicate temple, along with her adored family, will be escorted to Elmwood Cemetery for interment rites.
Ms. Newman's physical vessel is peacefully resting at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, where her family is receiving prestigious service.
