GARLAND M. KING SR.

CHAPEL HILL -- Garland McRay King Sr. was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Goldsboro, N.C.

He was the youngest son of Mattie Highsmith and Major Lewis King.

He married Helen Henderson in 1940, with whom he founded the original King's Barbecue in Goldsboro.

They were members of First African Baptist Church.

They then moved to New York, where he worked for CBS television chairman, Frank Smith, as a personal assistant. He later became building supervisor and assistant office manager of Allied International Bank in Manhattan.

He retired with his wife in White Plains, N.Y., where they were members of Bethel Baptist Church.

They recently relocated to Chapel Hill, N.C., where he is survived by his wife, Helen King; son, Garland M. King Jr.; daughter-in-law, Katherine Perry King; grandson, Garland M. King III; granddaughter, Lovey King-Imonti; great-granddaughters, Ashley Imonti and Kenya Imonti; and nephew, James Flowers.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home, 112 S. Graham St. in Chapel Hill, N.C., 27516. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at Jones Funeral Home.

Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home.
