WILLIAM LEE PATRICK

Feb. 16, 1967-Oct. 17, 2010

DUDLEY -- William Lee Patrick, 43, 2086 Emmaus Church Road, died Sunday evening.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of Willard "Pat" Odell and Gay Wingler Patrick of North Wilkesboro, N.C.

Pursuing a career in education, he became a published author, and was awarded the Renaissance Editors Award while attending Wayne Community College.

He graduated from University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and began his teaching career in the English department at Goldsboro High School.

He loved his students and referred to them as his kids. He inspired and expected their best, and was recognized for his devotion during the 2009/10 school year by obtaining the distinction of Teacher of the Year.

An avid outdoorsman, Lee loved fishing and the coast most of all. His picture can be found on most North Carolina coastal piers holding various record-sized species of fish for that pier. He spent many happy times toward this endeavor from the time he was able to hold a fishing rod until shortly before his death.

A memorial service will held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home in Goldsboro, with Wilbur Shirley and the Rev. John Hill officiating.

He is survived by his wife, Charlyn M. Patrick, and siblings, Gail Marsh, Mary Sue Fannin and husband, Steve, Mike Patrick and wife, Cody.

He was a cherished uncle to nieces, Stephanie Fannin, Mary Jaimes, Emily Briscoe, Elizabeth Drake, Chole Patrick and Ashley Patrick; nephew, Brian Patrick; great-nephews, Zachery Fannin and Micah Jaimes; and great-niece, Mya Jaimes.

The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, Va., 22116.
