Jessie James Capps, 85, died Friday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Toler officiating. Burial with firefighter honors and military honors will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

Born in Sampson County, he was the son of the late John Henry Capps and Jennie Solace Capps and husband of the late Louise Daniels Capps. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Henry Capps. Jessie was a World War II Veteran with the US Army, was retired from the Goldsboro Fire Department after 30 years and also retired from Arnold-Wilbert Vault Company after 42 years. He was a member of the Goldsboro Retired Firefighters Association and Love Memorial Baptist Church.

Mr. Capps is survived by three daughters, Sally and Woody Stevens of Grantham, Pat and Mac Taylor of Hookerton, Peggy and Reynold Jernigan of Goldsboro; five grandchildren, Carol and David Kelsey of American Fork, Utah, Tammy and Bennie Oakes of Hookerton, James Stevens of Grantham, Wendy and Daniel Fields of Lumberton, Lisa and Ryan McGirt of Lumberton; six great grandchildren, Renee' and Jason Clutter, Sam Kelsey, Nathan and Rosalynn Kelsey, Talea Kelsey, all of American Fork, Utah, Elizabeth Fields and Dakota McGirt, both of Lumberton; and a great-great granddaughter, Scarlett Clutter of American Fork, Utah; and a special friend, Pauline Wiggins of Goldsboro.

Flowers are welcome and memorial gifts may be directed to the Love Memorial Baptist Church, 192 Woodland Church Road, Goldsboro, NC 27530 or to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

Family members will greet friends this evening from 6 until 8 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of his daughter, Peggy Jernigan, 617 Foxwood Drive in the Crestwood Subdivision in the Mar Mac Community.
