MARY VIRGINIA "GINGER" CURRIN THOMPSON

Ginger Thompson, 76, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Ginger was born in Richmond, Va., Aug. 27, 1934, to the late Eugene Gooch Currin Jr. and Margaret Ropp Currin.

She was full of love for her family and friends, and she loved her pets.

Ginger attended St. Mary's College in Raleigh, and then graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with Phi Beta Kappa honors, majoring in French and Spanish. She taught sixth grade school in Asheboro, married and focused most of her efforts raising her children. She briefly taught English at Goldsboro High School.

In recent years, guided by her strong faith in Christ, Ginger used her Spanish language skills to work tirelessly to assist Spanish-speaking immigrants transitioning to life in Wayne County. She taught English as a second language classes and translated for expectant mothers and others in need with their doctor visits, where many medical providers did not speak Spanish. She also personally provided transportation to scores of these people for medical appointments across eastern North Carolina.

She was known at "Cita" or "Abuelita" (Grandmamma) to many children in the area.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Drew Clark officiating. A private burial will be at a later date.

Ginger is survived by her husband of 54 years, G. Kent Thompson; her sons, G. Kent Thompson Jr., Gene C. Thompson, James L. Thompson and J. Scott Thompson; and her grandchildren, Grace Thompson and Clare Thompson of Media, Pa., Joshua Thompson of Goldsboro, Brittany Thompson of Goldsboro, Sara Scott Thompson, Brinkley Thompson and Judson Thompson of Raleigh.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church for the Hispanic Fund at 1101 E. Ash St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
