MICHAEL A. HEEKIN

Michael Alan Heekin, 69, died Sunday, May 23, 2010.

Mr. Heekin retired from his position in human resources with Rockwell International of Lenoir. He had previously been employed as a personnel manager with Burlington Industries and A.P. Parts both of Goldsboro.

He served as a United States Air Force captain in the Vietnam War, stationed in Thailand. During his military service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, among other decorations.

He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Edward F. and Ruth Kirby Heekin.

He was a 1958 graduate of Walnut Hills High School of Cincinnati, where he excelled in sports. He received an MBA from Central University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science degree from San Francisco State.

A lifelong republican, Mr. Heekin served as chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party from 1972 to 1974, and attended, by invitation, the 1972 presidential inauguration.

Also an avid golfer, he achieved three holes-in-one in his career. He was a member of Catawba Valley Country Club for more than 25 years.

He is survived by his daughters, Andrea Gail Heekin of Belhaven and Sarah Llewellyn Heekin of Goldsboro; his brother, Timothy Heekin and wife, Linda, of Wilmington, Ohio; his nephew, Geoff Heekin of Chicago, Ill.; his niece, Katherine Heekin of Portland, Ore.; and his stepdaughters, Marsha Carson and Karen Meads both of Hickory.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Heekin; his parents; and his brother and sister-in-law, Edward F. Heekin Jr. and wife, Judy.

The family will receive visitors at Catawba Valley Country Club Tuesday, May 25, 2010, from 5 to 7 p.m. A full military internment, with the Rev. Gene Carpenter presiding will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro.

The family will receive friends and family after the service at Goldsboro Country Club.
