NORMAN RAULSTON

Died May 14, 2010

Norman E. Raulston, Goldsboro resident for more than 60 years, passed away Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital from congestive heart failure and pneumonia at the age of 89.

A memorial service will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at Madison Avenue Baptist Church.

Norman was born in Hixson, Tenn., the eldest of seven children.

He studied business and was employed as a young man by the Atlantic Coast Line, which ultimately brought him to Goldsboro. He met and married Doylouise Adams in Savannah, Ga., where both were working. They adopted a baby girl in Savannah and moved to Goldsboro in 1949.

Norman and Doy had a rich, full and busy life growing their garden, fishing, hunting, antique refinishing, reading, collecting old bottles and doing good works.

Norman was a member of the Masons and Lions and helped initiate Goldsboro's first Humane Society. He and his family were charter members of Madison Avenue Baptist Church.

Later in life, he suffered from many illnesses, surviving four different cancers, a hip replacement, which failed, and macular degeneration, which took most of his sight. His lovely wife became ill and he took care of her until she passed away, despite his illness.

His friends will remember his interest in virtually everything in the natural world, his wry sense of humor and his compassion for people and animals.

Norman's family, an adopted daughter and four remaining sisters, are indebted to his friends and caregivers at Sunbridge Nursing Home and Glen Care Assisted Living for their loving attention to him and to members of Madison Avenue Baptist Church for many years of kindness.
