HOWARD A. "BUDDY" SHAW SR.
Howard A. "Buddy" Shaw, Sr., 70, of 1911 Stephens St., passed away Sunday at Wake Medical Center.
A native of Palm Beach County, Fla., he was the son of the late Howard Lee and Helen Louise McIntosh Shaw. Buddy, as he was known by his many friends and family, was retired from the N.C. Office of EMS after 25 years of service, including 10 years as Eastern Regional Supervisor. He was a member of First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and finance member.
Buddy served as a Goldsboro City Council member from 1970 until 1979 and as a Wayne County Commissioner from 1988 until 1992. He served by appointment of the Governor as a member of the N.C. Boat Safety Board and the N.C. Fire-Rescue Pension Board for 12 years and was reappointed July 1, 2009.
Buddy was a member of the Goldsboro Rescue/EMS for 28 years. He served as captain and has been a lifetime member since 1985. He was a member of the N.C. Rescue & EMS Association since 1960, serving as Vice-Commander and Commander, Board of Directors, and Chairman of the Legislative Committee. He was a member of the N.C. High School Officials Athletic Association for 37 years and was chosen to officiate the 1991 N.C./S.C. High School Shrine Bowl Game.
Buddy was a member of Goldsboro Masonic Lodge #634 A.F. & A.M., Goldsboro York Rite, and Valley of Raleigh Scottish Rite. He was a Wayne County Shrine Club member, having served as President and became a lifetime member in 2010. He was a member of Sudan Mini Rigs, having served as Captain and also a lifetime member since 2010. Buddy was a Sudan Shriner and served as Captain of the Sudan First Aid Unit. He was appointed to the Sudan Divan as Director in 1999, served 11 years and was awarded Director Emeritus in 2010. He was a member of Shriner's Hospital Board of Directors in Greenville, S.C., from 1998 until 2003.
Buddy was awarded by the Goldsboro Jaycees' The Outstanding Rescue Person of The Year two times and the Distinguished Service Award. He was selected as Five Outstanding Young Men of North Carolina and "Who's Who in North Carolina". In 2009 he was presented the highest award given by the Governor of North Carolina, The Order Of The Long Leaf Pine.
Funeral services to celebrate the life and service of Howard "Buddy" Shaw will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Glenn Phillips and the Rev. Mike Eddinger officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in Willow Dale Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Bekshaw Shaw; son, Howard A. "Howie" Shaw Jr. and wife Joy Ginn Shaw of Goldsboro; daughter, Debbie S. Capps and husband Jim Capps Jr. of Raleigh; grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Shaw, Matthew Howard Shaw, and Haley Lee Ginn all of Goldsboro; sister, Joy Lee S. Gallion of San Angelo Texas; brother, Don B. Shaw and wife, Carol B. Shaw of Gainesville, Fla.; brother-in-law, William "Bill" Woodard and wife Marie of Charleston, S.C.; sister-in-law, Valerie B. Goss and husband Gordon of Brandon, Miss.; and numerous special nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Frances Marie Shaw, brother-in-law, Don E. Gallion, and parents-in-law, Andy and Lucile W. Bekshaw.
Flowers are welcomed or the family request that memorials may be made to honor the life of Buddy to Shriners Hospital For Children, 403 E. Front Street, New Bern, N.C. 28560, or to the Elevator Fund-First Baptist Church, 125 S. John St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Seymour Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
