LAGRANGE -- Alvin Suggs, 86, passed away Thursday.

A service of remembrance will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gerald Stacy officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.

Alvin was born Aug. 12, 1923, in LaGrange to the late Arvil and Emma Davis Suggs.

He graduated from Atlantic Christian College and later East Carolina University with a master's degree in social studies. Alvin taught in the Lenoir County Public Schools for 34 years.

Mr. Suggs was a lifelong member of LaGrange Christian Church, where he served as an elder and sang in the choir for 72 years.

Alvin served with the United States Army during World War II.

He was well-known for the roses he grew and his Christmas decorating. He enjoyed preparing Sunday lunches for his family, and everyone enjoyed his chicken pastry and pound cake.

Mr. Suggs is survived by two sisters, Alma Hawkins of LaGrange and Louise Fowler of Hampton, Va., along with a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by his siblings, Leamon, Leslie, Lloyd, Bill, Alton, Lila Belle, Alice, Carl, Lonnie, Sue and Arvil Jr.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, and at other times they will be at the home.
