Frederic Clift McCall of Goldsboro, died peacefully on Friday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by his family.
A private service will be held at Willow Dale Cemetery today, officiated by the Rev. Ryan Rasmussen and the Rev. Drew Clark.
Mr. McCall was born in Oakland, Calif., on June 7, 1921, to the late Frances Clift McCall and Joseph Donahue. He was married to the late Jean Gibson McCall of Goldsboro who preceded him in death July 21, 2004, after 55 years of marriage.
Mr. McCall graduated from the University of Southern California with a BS in Industrial Management. He was a three-year varsity football letterman at USC, receiving the Life Pass Award for his contribution to Trojan football. His football career ended in the 1948 Rose Bowl. While at USC, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
During World War II, Fred served for three years with the 345th Corp. of Engineers in the Mediterranean theater being discharged as a first sergeant.
After graduation, he married Jean Gibson of Goldsboro. He began his corporate career with Dixie Portland Flour Company in Chattanooga, Tenn., then Scott Paper Company in Atlanta, Ga. He spent the last 25 years with Olinkraft Forest Products Company (later John Manville) in Dallas, Texas, and Monroe, La. He was vice president when he retired.
Fred was active in his church and civic organizations everywhere he lived. He was first ordained a deacon in Monroe, La. He was a deacon, elder, trustee, Sunday school teacher and superintendent at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
In Monroe, he was president of the YMCA and was on the Board of Directors of the Southeastern YMCA. Fred was chairman of United Givers, president of the Northeast Louisiana University Boosters Club, president of Monroe Rotary International, vice president and board of directors of Monroe Chamber of Commerce. He received the Founders Medal from the Northeast Louisiana Chapter of the American Diabetic Association. After retiring to Pine Knoll Shores in North Carolina, Fred enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, golfer and tennis player. He enjoyed keeping the local widows supplied with fresh fish. He served as president of the Pine Knoll Shores Associations and various town responsibilities. Fred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City, chairman of the Foundation Committee and was active with the building and planning committee. He enjoyed working as a volunteer with the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort.
Fred is survived by two daughters, Randy M. Byrd and Frances M. Boyce and her husband, Larry; one son, Frederic Clift McCall Jr. and his wife, Susan; three grandchildren, Frederic III, Carmen and Michael, and his good friend "Buffy," the poodle, all from Goldsboro.
