David Arnold Atkins, 76, died Saturday at Britthaven Nursing Home.
A memorial service and inurnment in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain will be held at a later date.
Mr. Atkins was born in Black Mountain July 11, 1933, to the late Labian Cline Atkins and Bessie Lindsey Atkins.
He was a retired plant superintendent with Georgia Pacific.
Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife, Katie Harrell Atkins of Smithfield; his daughter, Mary Shelton and husband, Steve, of Dudley; his son, David Atkins and wife, Beth Anne, of Winterville; his sister, Jody Brown of Black Mountain; and his grandchildren, William Atkins, Elizabeth Atkins and Anna Shelton.
