PIKEVILLE -- Annie Mae Bissette Howell, 92, passed away today at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Barry Stallings officiating. Burial will follow at Pikeville Cemetery.

A native of Nash county, she was the daughter of Ernest Bissette and Lida Langston Bissette. She was married to the late H. Clifton Howell.

Mrs. Howell was a retired secretary with the Wayne County School System.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church and a member of the ladies auxiliary and was a former Sunday school teacher.

In August 1999 she was contacted by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources Division of Historical Resources Archives and Records Section where she provided information from her scrapbook on military veterans. Mrs. Howell spent many years collecting memorabilia of Pikeville and surrounding areas. She was also the author of poems "Hidden Treasures."

Mrs. Howell is survived by her daughters, Lida H. Fultz and husband, Jim of Pikeville and Becky H. Stroud and husband, Ivey, of Raleigh; her sons, Henry N. Howell and wife, Geneva, of Garner and Charlie Howell of Pikeville. She is also survived by her sister, Ophelia Aycock of Pikeville; a brother, Paul Bissette and wife, Edna, of Pikeville and E.C. Bissette of Cape Carteret; nine grandchildren, Marcy Henn, Maile Shirley, Deana Garrou, Cliff Greenup of Pikeville, Hope Graney, Neal Howell and Lee Webber of Raleigh, David Howell of Wilmington and Dana Webber of New Jersey; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her sister, Ernestine Dantzler, and a brother, Benny Bissette.

Pallbearers will be Neal Howell, David Howell, Cliff Greenup, Lee Webber, Jaye Henn, Burney Shirley, Tom Garrou and Patrick Graney.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
