GEORGE L. HARVEY

TARBORO -- George Lloyd Harvey, 96, died Friday at The Fountains at the Albemarle.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pinewood Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
He was born in Little Rock, Ark., to the late George A. and Gertie Kime Harvey.
His father, a druggist, established the Palace Drug Store in Little Rock in 1898, where George worked for many years. His father became ill during the depression and George took over the operation of the drug store.
In 1929, he passed the examination for an amateur radio license and was assigned to call W4UI and subsequently passed the radio telephone first examination for operating a broadcast station and the radio telegraph license for operating shipboard radios.
He earned a Master's degree in physics at the University of Arkansas and took graduate courses at Harvard, Columbia and New York Universities.
During World War II, George taught electronics in the graduate school at Harvard University.
After the war, George was an electronics engineer at Sperry Gyroscope Co. and a physicist at the Naval Research Laboratory.
He was married to the late Frankie Moore Harvey and was a member of Pinewood Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Harvey is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Harvey MacGregor of Asheville; a son, George Arthur Harvey of Marlboro, Mass.; and two grandchildren.
