JOHN T. MEWBORN

John Titus Mewborn, beloved husband of 56 years to the former Edna Clark of Farmville, passed away peacefully on Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

A lifelong resident of Greene County, he was born Nov. 11, 1928, at the Mewborn family homeplace to Titus George Mewborn and Mary Elizabeth Moye Mewborn. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a longtime active member of the American Legion Post 94 in Snow Hill.

A farmer by trade until his retirement, he was a member of Greene County Farm Bureau, and for 25 years served with the county Farm Service Agency, formerly ASCS. He was a director for the Wachovia Bank Board for over 20 years, and served as a Greene County Commissioner from 1983 to 1992. Mr. Mewborn was a loyal member of Eden Christian Church where he served many roles since joining with his family in 1960.

Most of all John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed his farm, garden and playing golf.

He is survived by his wife Edna; children, Leigh Mewborn Hardy and husband, Allen of Hookerton, Robin Mewborn Hardy and husband, Parker of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Jeffrey Mewborn of Snow Hill; grandchildren, Kristen Hardy Flippin and husband, Erik of Pikeville, Jonathan Hardy of Greenville, Andrew Hardy and John Mewborn Hardy of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; sisters, Nan Mewborn Fields of LaGrange and Jean Mewborn Mrosla and husband, Richard of Durham; brother, Ancel Mewborn and wife, Sylvia of Chapel Hill; and many special friends and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Moye Mewborn and Ida Wooten Tripp.

The family wishes to thank the compassionate and caring staffs of Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Britthaven of Snow Hill, Greene Regional Home Health in Snow Hill, and the many faithful friends and family who visited John during his extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill followed by burial at the Mewborn Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the home at 2103 Titus Mewborn Road, LaGrange.
