WALTER S. HATCH
Sept. 12, 1924-July 28, 2009
Walter Steele Hatch, 84, passed away Tuesday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with the Rev. Ryan Rasmussen officiating.
Walter was born in Wayne County Sept. 12, 1924, to the late Edwy G. Hatch Sr. and Minnie Collins Hatch of Mount Olive.
He served his country in the 564th Signal Air Warning Battalion in the United States Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. During that time, he was awarded the EAMET Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars. He was discharged in 1945.
As a civilian, Walter was elected as a constable and served for four two year terms for the former Goldsboro Township. He was a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro. He had volunteered as the office manager for the Wayne County Republican Party and was active in the Republican Party until his declining health.
Walter is survived by his wife, Fanny Hollowell Hatch; his daughters, Rita H. Minton of Elkin and Betty H. Patterson and husband, Dennis, of Knightdale; his sisters, Elizabeth H. "Lib" Sutton of Goldsboro and Louise H. DeLuca of Faison; his sister-in-law, Beverly B. Hatch of Mount Olive; and his grandchildren, Allan Minton of Elkin, Katie Minton of Charlotte and John Patterson of Knightdale.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his brothers, Ira W. Hatch and E.G. Hatch Jr.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
