DUDLEY -- Oliver Ray Best Sr., 76, died Thursday afternoon at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Johnny Sasser and the Rev. J.D. Eddins officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park with Masonic rites.

Ray was born in Wayne County May 3, 1933, to the late Thomas Aaron Best and Ida Griffith Best.

He was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church, where he was serving as a deacon.

Ray was employed with Daniels Construction Co. and was a member of Mount Olive Masonic Lodge No. 208 A.F. & A.M.

Ray is survived by his wife, Anne W. Thompson Best; his children, Donna Davis and husband, Steve, of Wilson, Oliver Ray Best Jr. and wife, Wanda, of Dudley, Ronna Grady and husband, George, of Mount Olive and Robert Thompson Jr. and wife, Lora, of LaGrange; his sister, Jeffie Evans; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Best; and his brothers and sisters, Hazel Gainey, Thomas Best Sr., Fannie Millard, Mary Bass, Theodoria Coley, Julia Taylor, Willard Griffith and Rufus Best.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at his home, 4240 U.S. 117 south alternate, Dudley.
