Mother Josephine Smith Lewis, 92, of 602 Wilmington Ave., slept into God's tender loving care Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
A homegoing celebration will held Saturday, April 11, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Branch Memorial Tabernacle at 500 Gulley St., with Pastor Devin Pickett officiating. She will be laid to rest in Old Mill Cemetery.
She was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Jacksonville, Fla., to the the late Judge and Easter Susie Sasser Smith.
Mother Josephine Lewis was a drum major for Jesus Christ and was known to be an outspoken Christian in churches throughout the Wayne County area. She consistently sounded the alarm for Christians to live a holy and righteous life. She was a great prayer warrior, declaring God's power to save, heal and deliver.
God gave Mother Josephine the vision for the Holy Ghost Drawing Center Crisis Center. This vision was implanted in the life of her daughter, Overseer Adeen Lewis George. She was passionate about the HGDC Crisis Center and the clients it serves.
She was a longtime member of St. Delight United Holy Church in LaGrange and served on the mother board. She worked at J.P. Taylor Factory and retired from Textilease Corp. as a seamstress.
Mother Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Lewis; her grandson, Terry Lewis, whom she reared; four brothers; and seven sisters.
She leaves never-ending and precious memories with six daughters, Mrs. Christine Washington, elder Adeen George, minister Lorene Beamon, all of Goldsboro, Mrs. Sadie Brown of Dudley, minister Mary Jane Guss (Lawrence) of Locust Grove, Ga., and Mrs. Arraima Brown (Oscar) of Chicago, Ill.; two loving god-daughters, Mrs. Ruth Williams and Mrs. Elaine Griffith (Wendell) of Goldsboro; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
There will a viewing held from 2 to 7 p.m. with the family present to recieve friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Rhodes Funeral Home chapel.
