C.A. MATHIS

FREMONT -- C.A. Mathis, 67, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday at the E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with the Rev. Alan Strickland and the Rev. Carroll Roper officiating.

C.A. was born on April 2, 1941, in Tuckasegee to the late Spirgeon N. Mathis and Lettie Mae Hooper Mathis. He moved to Hayesville in 1978, and later moved to Eureka in 2008 to be close to his children. C.A. was of the Baptist Faith and a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Marble. He retired as a Water Well Driller after 32 years of service and was a volunteer firefighter with over 10 years of service. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandsons.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jean Mathis of Eureka; his son, Jimmy Mathis and wife, Shannon, of Eureka; his daughter, Rita McTaggart and husband, Dale, of Eureka; and three grandsons, Clinton, Derrick and Adam McTaggart. He is also survived by his brothers, L.V. Mathis and wife, Mary, of Tuckasegee and Roy Mathis of Gastonia; his sisters, Betty Nicholson and husband, Harold, of Gastonia; Shirley Williamson of Whittier; Mary Watkins of Whittier and Joyce Farmer of Tuckasegee; his aunt, Roberta Hooper of Tuckasegee; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Mathis, and an infant nephew.

The family will receive friends at his home, 565 Reidtown Road, Fremont and immediately following the service at the graveside.

Arrangements are being handled by Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
