WOODROW CONNER JR.

Died Oct. 24, 2008

Woodrow W. Conner Jr., 65, went home to be with the Lord on Friday.

Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square. The interment will follow at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at Sykes Funeral Service and at other times at the home of Sandra Conner, 1700 Salem Church Road, Goldsboro.

A native of Kelford, he was the son of the late Woodrow W. Conner Sr. and the late Gracie Mae Conner. He was known as "Smokie Joe" by those who grew up with him. Before his illness, Woody worked as a produce manager for Food Lion in Murfreesboro.

Woody suffered complications from a stroke that occurred in April of 2000. He was lovingly cared for by his former wife, Sandra Conner for the last eight years, and was deeply and profoundly loved and cherished by his family.

To cherish wonderful memories, Woody leaves behind his best friend Sandra; two sons, Thomas D. Conner and wife, Veronica of Harvest, Ala. and Woodrow "Joe" W. Conner III of Goldsboro; and a daughter, Rhonda Conner Harris and husband Floydie of Golds-boro.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Nathan, Jayden, Jordan, Joey, Carson, Troy, Landon and Floydie Jr.; his brother, Thurman "Buck" Conner of Kelford; and a sister, Mae Harrell of Portsmouth, Va.; a very special friend, Joe Womack; and a host of family, friends, and former co-workers.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy Dickens.

The family wishes to thank Advantage Hospice Care of Selma and his nurses and care coordinators, Terry, Marsha and Teresa, for their tremendous care of Woody in these final months of his life, and also our thanks to the Rev. Sam Harvin for his many visits, and to the friends, family and church members who prayed for and visited Woody and his family during his illness.
