ALICE S. THOMAS

Died Oct. 20, 2008

On Monday afternoon at 4 p.m., Ms. Thomas died at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The visitation for Ms. Thomas will be held this evening, Friday, Oct. 24, at Howell Funeral Home in Goldsboro from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Howell Funeral Home. Final services for Ms. Thomas will be held at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham at 10 a.m. on Monday. All families and friends are invited to attend all services.

Ms. Thomas was a resident of Britthaven nursing home in Goldsboro. Her previous address was in Morehead City. Ms. Thomas was born in 1921, to the late Royal Wright and Nettie Gardner Smith of Durham.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Egbert and C.W. Smith; her sister, Betsy McNay; and her first grandson, Jefferson Gardner Johnston.

She is survived by her two sisters, Dorothy Thomas of Maryland and Louise Doweling of Goldsboro; her sons, Robert L. Johnston and wife, Judy, Frank Johnston and wife, Renee, Alan Johnston and wife, Heather.

Ms. Thomas had the following grandchildren, Jefferson G., Elana A, Robert G. of Robert L. Johnston, and Julia, Sarah, Jennifer, Brandon, Randy, of Frank Johnston, Alfred, Elliot, and Henry, of Alan Johnston. Together Ms. Thomas had 10 great-grandchildren.

Ms. Thomas was an avid patron of the arts and was a renowned artist herself. Her work was shown primarily in New York and Minneapolis. She held positions on the board of the Minneapolis Art Center, the Walker Art Center, the Minnetonka Art Center and the Minneapolis School of Arts. Ms. Thomas was a advocate of local and international artist and provided assistance for the internationals to come to the United States to show their art and become citizens. Ms. Thomas was active in supporting Christian churches locally and internationally.
