CHARLES D. PENUEL

Mr. Charles D. Penuel, 86, died peacefully on Monday at Plantation Estates in Matthews, N.C., after a courageous battle with cancer.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. R. Alton Cadenhead officiating. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:30 p.m. this evening at Harry and Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte.

Mr. Penuel was born on May 21, 1922, in Goldsboro, N.C., to the late Needham Henry and Sadie Evans Penuel. Following graduation from Rosewood High School in 1939, he served in the United States Army Signal Corps in England and France during World War II. He returned to college and received a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1949.

He was a loyal member of the Wolfpack Club and regularly attended football games for many years. In 1976, he was inducted to the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi as one of seven distinguished North Carolina State alumni.

Mr. Penuel joined Southern Bell shortly after graduation as Traffic Manager in Raleigh. He held various management positions in Asheville, Gastonia, Winston-Salem and Charlotte. Mr. Penuel was appointed Assistant Vice President of Regulatory Affairs in 1967 where retired in 1985.

He was an active member of Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs during his assignments and served with the United Way, the Boy Scout of America and Junior Achievement. He was an avid golfer and member of Carmel Country Club for over 40 years. He especially enjoyed his golf friendships with the ROFs.

Mr. Penuel was an active member of Providence Baptist Church. He was a member of Selby Daniels Sunday School class where he served in many faithful roles.

He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 65 years, Daphne, and their family; two sons Charles Jr., wife Dawn and granddaughter Kimberly of Orlando, Fla., and Patrick, wife Cheri, with grandchildren Claire and Thomas of Charlotte.

Mr. Penuel will also be dearly missed by his brother Buck Penuel of Swansboro; and sisters Pauline Mitchell of Pikeville, Joyce Sears of Wilmington and Linda Eytcheson of Goldsboro; as well as extended family and many, many caring friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother James Penuel of Goldsboro.

A heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful staff and volunteers with Hospice of Charlotte and Plantation Estates for their compassionate care and devotion to Mr. Penuel during his final months.
