NORA SMITH

Nora Faircloth Smith, 98, wife of the late Lt. Charlie Frank Faircloth and the late Gurney Lee Smith, left this world for her Heavenly home on the morning of June 6, 2008, surrounded by her family and friends at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Born May 25, 1910 to the late John Henry and Claire Dudley of Wayne County, she was the oldest of six siblings. Upon the death of her mother, at the age of 12 she became the primary caregiver to her younger brothers and sisters in the home.

She married Charlie Frank Faircloth and together raised six children in their many wonderful years together. Lt. Faircloth was a member of the Goldsboro Police Department and was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 19, 1960.

Mrs. Smith retired from General Electric after many years of diligent service. She volunteered with Wayne Memorial Hospital performing various duties after retirement. She attended Jefferson United Methodist Church in Goldsboro.

On Dec. 7, 1971, she married local farmer Gurney Lee Smith and enjoyed 22 years of marriage until his death on Nov. 15, 1993.

Mrs. Smith had an outgoing personality and loved meeting and talking with people, for she never knew a stranger. Her time was spent working in her garden and sharing meals with those whose lives were forever touched by her throughout the years.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her five siblings. Left behind to cherish her memory are her six children, Edmond and Pauline Faircloth of Goldsboro, D.J. and Margaret Faircloth of McDonough, Georgia, Marvin and Colleen Faircloth Waters of Goldsboro, Leon and Kathleen Faircloth Mitchell of Goldsboro, Robert and Lorraine Faircloth Jennette of Goldsboro, and Sharon Faircloth Martin of Goldsboro. She lives on in the lives of 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

The funeral will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro with the Rev. Doug Johnson and Dr. Richard A. Glosson officiating. Visitation will follow the service. A graveside service will be held at Pineview Cemetery on Hwy. 111 in Seven Springs on Monday, June 9, 2008, at 3 p.m. Family will receive friends at other times at the home of Sharon Martin, 1129 Tommy's Road, Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mrs. Smith to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534 and/or to Jefferson United Methodist Church, 1101 N. Jefferson Ave., Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
