GREENSBORO -- Katherine Royall Williams died May 9, 2008, at Moses Cone Hospi-tal.
A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m.
Friends will be greeted following the service in the Virginia Gilmer Room adjoining the sanctuary. An inurnment service will be held at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon at Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro.
Katherine was born in Goldsboro and was the daughter of Elizabeth Waddell and William Allen Royall.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, John R. Williams; her daughters, Rebecca White and Elizabeth Hamilton and husband, Peter, of Greensboro and Virginia Carter and husband, Steve, of High Point; grandchildren, William Royall Carter and Christin Carter; and her sisters, Elizabeth Royall Sutton and husband, Bryan, and Pamela Royall Lawrence of Goldsboro.
John's career took them from Fayetteville to Gastonia, Mooresville and Easley, S.C., Greensboro, Chattanooga and back to Greensboro. In all instances, Katherine was very active in church, civic, music and writing activities.
She was a graduate of St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh where she earned a music certificate and participated as a soloist, class officer, swimmer, a member of the Granddaughters' Club, a cheerleader and many other related activities for two years.
Katherine transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduating in the class of 1949. She majored in English (bachelor of arts degree), was chosen as a member of the honorary Valkyries and the Pi Beta Phi social sorority and was active in many other interests. It was there that she met and became engaged to John Williams.
She was a devoted member and supporter of First Presbyterian Church where she served on numerous committees and was an elected deacon and elder.
Of special significance were children -- as well as the elderly. Her interests all her life included music, art, writing, friends of all ages, her widespread family, helping the sick and infirmed, making new acquaintances and playing bridge.

Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Funeral Home is assisting the Williams family.
