NEZZIE CARTER-MOORE

Feb. 8, 1923-March 28, 2008

Nezzie Vea Carter-Moore, 85, passed away on Friday at Duke University Medical Center. She was born in Wayne County, N.C., to the late Litmon Aaron Carter and Golar Lee Whitehead Carter. She was preceded in death by her brother, Hursie Emons Carter.

She began her primary education in the Wayne County Public Schools. In 1941, her family moved to Durham, N.C. where she completed her high school education. In 1948, she graduated from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. She received her master's degree from North Carolina Central University, Durham, N.C. in 1963.

Nezzie attended Ebenezer Baptist Church in Durham, N.C., and, subsequently, joined Peace Missionary Baptist Church, Durham, N.C., in 1974 where she was an active member. She participated in a variety of church organizations and activities, such as the Pastor's Aide Club, Trustee Board, Women's Day Committee and she maintained historical information for the church.

Nezzie was a guidance counselor at Merrick Moore High School and C. E. Jordan High School in Durham, N.C. She had a "passion" for guiding and helping her students, which was rooted from her career as a counselor. As a beacon of light for the thousands of students whose lives she touched, Nezzie was very instrumental in designing their careers and guiding their preparation for college and higher education. She spent countless, tireless hours doing so. Nezzie retired from the Durham public school system on July 1, 1998, after 36 years of service. Because of her love for serving her community, particularly the youth, Nezzie continued to stay actively involved in the school system even after her retirement.

Nezzie's beautiful memory will be cherished and missed by her cousins, Minnie G. Carney, Avery G. Moore, Vivian G. Jeans, Ruebenna G. Flack, Deloris W. Drawhorn, Monzell Greenfield, Emma W. Hooper, Henry M. Whitehead, Delmos Whitehead, Harold Whitehead and Lawrence Whitehead; two special cousins and friends, Yvette Lee and Belinda Perry; and a host of other loving relatives and dear friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Peace Missionary Baptist Church and interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery. Nezzie body will be at the church prior to the funeral service with the playing of the chimes from 10 to noon and the wake will be from noon to 1 p.m.

Memorial gifts can be made to Peace Missionary Baptist Church Library Fund in her name.

Family will receive friends at the home of Yvette Lee, 111 W. Alton St., Durham, N.C.
