JAMES W. JERNIGAN

James W. "Jim" Jernigan, 87, died Monday at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late James D. and Elizabeth Crumpler Jernigan. A member of First Baptist Church, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, the EAMET Campaign Medal with four bronze service stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Jim retired from the National Parks Service and also from Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Glenn Phillips Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Jim is survived by his sister, Emma J. Rouse of LaGrange, N.C.; five nephews and one niece; and his many friends at Berkeley Mall.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home immediately prior to the service.
