DAVID JAMES LANE

GARNER -- David James Lane, 81, passed away peacefully at Rex Hospital Tuesday, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Lane was born in Goldsboro to the late Emmett Dempsey Lane and Jennie Strickland Lane Howell. A U.S. Army World War II veteran, he served as a rifleman with the 307 Infantry in the South Pacific. He retired from North Carolina State University with 25 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed hunting, gardening and fishing on the Scotch Bonnet Pier at Surf City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Garner United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Garden, Clayton.

Mr. Lane is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sallie Smith Lane; sons, David James Lane II and his wife, Pat, Luby Dean Lane, all of Garner; daughter, Diane Lane Allen of Garner; sister, Ruth Webb of St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandchildren, D. Michele Lane, Misty Joe Jackson and her husband, Jody, Jennie Rena Allen, Sallie D. Stephens and her husband, Jason; and great-grandchildren, Allen Jackson and Blake Stephens.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
