GORDON R. JERNIGAN

Died Jan. 13, 2008

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Gordon R. Jernigan, 77, died Sunday in Pensacola. Gordon was born in Wayne County to the late Rufus and Merribell Creel Jernigan. Gordon was preceded in death by two sisters, Inez and Grace Harrell.

He is survived by two sisters, Mabel J. Cox and husband, Bill, of Goldsboro, Mildred Sutton and husband, Eddie, of Calypso; several nieces and nephews; four adopted children; and four grandchildren.

Gordon served in the U.S. Air Force, after which he was an air traffic controller in Brownsville, Texas, moved to Pensacola in 1957 and continued in this profession until he retired from the FAA. He was the Executive Director of the Escambia County, Fla., Housing Finance Authority since 1984. He was president of the Florida Association of Local Housing Finance Authorities, past president of the Crippled Children's Home and a member of the Rotary Club with perfect attendance for 27 years. Gordon was loved by his family and friends and enjoyed visiting with them each time he would come to North Carolina. The family would like to especially thank C.J. Pipkins and husband, Sammy, for all their help and support during Gordon's illness and for being with him in his final days.

Gordon's funeral and burial was held in Pensacola, Fla., on Jan. 16, 2008. A memorial service will be held on Jan. 27, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Jordan's Chapel Baptist Church, Highway 13 South, Mount Olive, N.C.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and /or Jordan's Chapel Baptist Church.
