CHIEF M/SGT DONALD G. TERRELL, RET.

Sept. 5, 1937-Jan. 17, 2008

Chief M/Sgt. (Ret.) Donald G. Terrell, 70, died peacefully Thursday at his home. He was born in San Francisco, Calif., to the late Leslie and Ruth Terrell. The Navy was his career goal until he was recruited to serve in the Army Special Forces Unit initiated under President John F. Kennedy. His mission was to extract the Vietnam Prisoners of War. Donald was a highly decorated soldier. Those of you who knew Don might not have known of his merits while he served in the Armed Forces because he was a very humble veteran. After he retired from the United States Army, he worked for the federal government as the regional Director of Counter Espionage Investigations. During his service as the Regional Director, he received the highest honors of the Exceptional Service Medal and the Meritorious Civilian Medal. After his retirement, Don and Darlene moved to North Carolina and made Goldsboro their home.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Darlene Bates Terrell; one brother, Richard Terrell of Sacramento, Calif.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Ralph Johnston of Sacramento, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special friends, John and Jill Williams, Mel and Linda Powers and Kevin and Jill Abrahamson.

Don was an outstanding example to all who knew him. His honesty, kindness and true friendship will always be cherished. Don fought the good fight. He finished his course. He is at rest.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Donald Terrell Scholarship Fund, North Johnston High School, P.O. Box 339, Kenly, N.C. 27242.

Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and Crematory of Goldsboro is serving the family and online condolences can be sent through www.shumate-faulk.com.
