ROGER L. BOWIE

MYRTLE BEACH -- Roger Lee Bowie, 44, died Saturday at Grand Strand Healthcare Center. Roger was born in Goldsboro, N.C., the son of Mary Johnson Bowie and the late Charles E. Bowie. He was predeceased by a special aunt, Frankie Smith.

He attended Schools for the Deaf in Wilson and Morganton, N.C. Roger was an Eagle Scout and the senior class president and salutatorian of his high school. Roger received a scholarship to Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C., where he graduated in 1989 with a bachelor's degree. After graduation, he moved to Austin, Texas, and worked as a teacher's aide for the Texas School for the Deaf. He was a member of the Ocean View Baptist Church where he was involved in the deaf ministry as long as he was able.

Surviving in addition to his mother, Mary J. Bowie of Myrtle Beach, are two brothers, Charles E. "Chuck" Bowie Jr. of College Park, Md., and Alan Bowie of Myrtle Beach; five nieces, Ashley, Tracy, Terri, Kayla and Ashley W.; an aunt, Jewel Stockton of Longs, S.C.; and many loving cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Conway, S.C., with the Rev. Ken Timmerman officiating.

The family will receive friends at McMillan-Small Funeral Home on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Grand Strand Healthcare Center for the loving care they gave Roger.
