HULAND B. GARDNER

WILSON -- Huland Barbnes Gardner, 85, died Sunday, following an automobile accident in Saratoga at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. A double funeral service for Mr. Gardner and his wife will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joyner's Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. Gaylord Lehman will officiate.

Huland was born in Wilson County to the late Johnnie and Minnie Gardner. He graduated from Statonsburg High School. Huland served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He met his wife of 64 years, Peggy, in Boston. Huland retired from the maintenance department of Wilson Memorial Hospital. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering with the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, driving the DAV van to the Veteran's Hospital and several other activities. Huland was a member of the American Legion, 40 and 8, and a charter member of the Marine Corps League and several other organizations.

He is survived by two daughters, Suzette G. Evans and special friend, Wayne Renfrow, of Elm City and Judy G. Trott and husband, Jerry, of Goldsboro; two sons, Ray Gardner and wife, Patsy, of Rocky Mount and James "Jimmy" Gardner and wife, Toni Ann, of Goldsboro; a brother, Kenneth Gardner and wife, Patricia, of Elm City; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Huland was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie William Gardner and Minnie Stott Gardner; and a brother, Marion Louis Gardner.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times the family will be at 8638 Forest Cove Road, Elm City.

Flowers are welcome or memorials in his memory may be directed to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 513 Tartts Mill Road, Wilson, N.C. 27893 or 40 and 8 Scholarship Fund, American Legion Post 13, 2035 U.S. 201 S, Wilson, N.C. 27893.

Arrangements are by Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway.
