PIKEVILLE -- Bertha Smith Mooring Stroud, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

Bertha was born in Wayne County to the late Joshua Smith and Lou Lancas-ter Smith. She was married to the late Tom Mooring and Milton Ivey Stroud. Bertha was retired from Textilease. She believed that work was "good for you." Bertha continued to work around her house and in her yard until her hospitalization in July. She was an avid quilter. Just as she stitched fabric together into beautiful quilts, she was the common thread that held the family together.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Goff and the Rev. David Hollowell officiating. Inter-ment will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Hill Family Cemetery.

Bertha is survived by her son, Ivey Stroud and wife, Becky, of Raleigh; and grandsons, Chris Mooring and wife, Angie, Kelvin Mooring and wife, Karen, John Thornton and wife, Tammy, Jason Thornton and wife, and Michael Mooring. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, as well as many special nieces and nephews including, Derald Smith and Ann S. Smith, both of Goldsboro.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Stroud and her daughter, Linda Stroud Stocks. Bertha as also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at her home.
