COY D. GAINEY

RALEIGH -- Coy D. "Sonny" Gainey, 76, died on Wednesday at his home surrounded by his family.

Coy was born in Goldsboro, Wayne County, to the late Coy A. Gainey and Julia Becton Gainey. He graduated from the University of Washington with his Masters in Public Health. Coy was a program director for the Department of Health and Human Services with the federal government.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel, 1300 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, with the Rev. Thurman Horney officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by the service at 2 p.m. at the same location. Graveside services will follow at approximately 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Coy is survived by his wife, Sharon Sexton Gainey; his children, Randy Gainey and Edie Simpson of Norfolk, Va.; Robin and Steve Guillian of Burlington, Vt.; Nicole and Lauri Gainey of Seattle, Wash.; and Dee and Larry Abbate of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Shana Sexton and Mike Beavin of Arlington, Va.; and his sisters, Dorothy E. Casey of Raleigh, Betty G. Flowers of Goldsboro and Shirley Daulton of Crewe, Va.; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara "Pinki" Spencer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Coy's name to the Westover United Methodist Church -- Montagnards Ministry, 300 Powell Drive, Raleigh N.C.
