HARVEY P. THORNTON

GRANTHAM -- Harvey Preston Thornton, age 84, of 212 Corbett Hill Road, died Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Joseph Harvey and Betty Ann Grady Thornton. Mr. Thornton was a farmer and member of the Woodman of the World. He was a member of Eureka Christian Church and a deacon.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Eureka Christian Church with the Rev. Frank Purvis officiating. Burial will follow in the Grady Family Cemetery.

Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bessie Jordan Thornton; his nine children, including six sons, Shelton Thornton and wife, Irene, of Grantham, Rayvon Thornton and wife, Rita, of Clayton, N.C., Preston Thornton Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Grantham, Gordon Thornton and wife, Jenny, of Indian Springs, Harold Thornton and wife, Kathy, of Grantham, Gary Thornton of Grantham; three daughters, Violet Thornton of Grantham, Frances Capps and husband, James, of Grantham, Judy Coker and husband, Kenneth, of Grantham; one brother, Robert Thornton of Grantham; one sister, Neta Pate of Goldsboro; 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Eureka Christian Church, 2036 Dobbersville Road, Mount Olive, N.C. 28365.

Family members will greet friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
